I am a nerd and I LOVE textbooks.  I have taken quite a few classes on Smile Design however I would love to know what your favorite textbooks on smile design and cosmetic dentistry are...I need some bedtime story books!

One of my all time favorites is "Bonded Porcelain Restoration" by Pacal Magne.  It's a must read if your working through Accreditation.  Many test questions come from that publication.

    Nathan,

"Fundamentals of Esthetics" by Rufenacht is a classic.

I feel that one of the most valuable texts on restorative dentistry and fundamentals is "Esthetic Rehabilitation in Fixed Prosthodontics."  It is a 2 part series.  kind of expensive but WELL WORTH the money.  Not sure if you are familiar with him, but he is legitimate!  I would love to hear your feedback if you get a chance to read it!

    Nathan,
One of the books I have found helpful is Anteriors by Jan Hajto. The book has some great photos of smiles, outlines of teeth and closeups of the anterior teeth. Google the book. It comes out of Europe for the shipment. A very well put together book on design. Hope this helps some.

    Nathan,
Additionally, there is an entire set of study models made from hi-definition epoxy which is available for purchase from Jan Hajto as a companion to the book.
It is relatively pricey but well worth the $1,500 for the passionate clinician or technician whose pursuit of emulating nature knows no boundaries... ;) One interesting thing to mention is that it is especially interesting to study the translucency, color and internal dentinal/mamelon structures within each tooth presented in the photographs contained in the book, and then compare those features to the external surface morphology. Enjoy!

    Hi Kent,

Thank you very much for the information on the resin models that go with Dr. Jan Hajto's book!
I have the book from years ago and currently work with a lot of dentists on teaching them how to create lifelike anterior composites veneers which these models will definitely help enormously with visualizing the tooth morphology process, Thanks.

    Cheers,

    Hey Fred-

I would like to order this book along with the study models.  Tried doing online but my understanding of anything outside the English language is non-existent.  Any recommendations on best way to order this?  Thanks for the help!

    Andy,
Here is the link. http://anteriores.de/. Click on the box for "More Information" This takes you to the online store to order. Click translate in Google. When I ordered, I only got the picture gallery book. Now there is a new addition, or you can order both. There is an English edition. Make sure you select that one with the British flag logo.

    Hi Nathan,

Its great to know that you love textbooks as well as I do.
I would love to share with you these four books, some from 7-10 years old but have served me very well for "Smile Design"
which I still refer to from time to time. These should provide you some good nighttime stories for a while...lol.
Please check them out next time you visit Quintessence at any dental convention and I am always available if you have any other questions.

    Cheers,
    David

    Nathan,
Another really great book from Quintessence Publishing is "Esthetics of Anterior Fixed Prosthodontics" by Dr. Gerard Chiche and Alan Pinault. Dr. Chiche also co-authored a book, "Smile Design: a guide for clinician, ceramist and patient," with a world famous ceramist named Hitoshi Aoshima of Tokyo. Enjoy!

Thank you all for the recommendations.

I have decided to start with Bonded Porcelain Restorations by Pascal Mange.  I have seen this book referenced often and so far it is a wonderful read.

    Nathan,
Good call. It's a great book and all of these books help us on our journey of cosmetic excellence. Hopefully you will see Pascal Magne in person at the AACD meeting in San Diego on Saturday April 27th.
